The Effects of AITC on Weed Emergence and on the Growth and Yield of Soybean

Abstract

The previous AITC studies had shown that under laboratory conditions, allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) perform comparably with the popular nematicide DD. But aside from suppressing the nematode population, AITC's effect on crop growth and yield should be evaluated too. Moreover, previous observations on its alleged effect on weeds were validated.

Results of the follow-up study indicated that AITC had no visible significant effect on soybean growth and yield. Soybean height, biomass and yield are not significantly different between plots treated with AITC and the untreated plots.

On the other hand, significant differences are noticed on AITC*s effect on weed emergence. Plots treated with AITC had significantly lower weed populations than both the control and the check nematicide. DD treated plots and the untreated plots had as much as 5.8 and 5.4 times more weed than the AITC treated plots, respectively.

However, results of the field tests indicated that the 42-91% mortalities effected by AITC are quite lower than the 68-95% nematode mortalities effected by DD. Furthermore, AITC only performed comparably with DD in causing nematode mortalities at the 0-5 cm soil layer. Such results indicate that further investigations on the AITC*s mode of action under field conditions should be done.
