[Research in the past]
I have studied the propagation and establishment of farming cultures through investigations of the locations of paddy fields and upland fields, farming tools, and settlements. This study had been mainly conducted in Japan, South Korea, and China, where rice cultivation is the keystone of their agriculture. I have studied it from the perspective of various research fields (agriculture, botany, geology, and geography).
[My role in this research]
Through research on sites representing each phase of the Neolithic age in China, I plan to study the process of change in the location requirements, size, and productivity of the paddy fields. In addition, I will study this in collaboration with Chinese archeologists and other study groups.
[Major methodology: Micro land-form analysis, Sedimentary facies analysis]
Micro landform analysis is a method of examining ancient topography that is hidden underground. Analysis of sedimentary facies enables us to consider the various mechanisms (sedimentary factor, process, style and cycle, pedogenesis) by which a stratum is formed and trace the human activities left behind on the stratum. Using these two analysis methods, I plan to clearly show how farming develops in the midst of environmental change.
